PRODUCT DETAILS

Rose's Olivewood Small Spoon

Some spoons you forget you're holding — and then the warmth of the wood reminds you they feel different. This one settles into the palm like it's been waiting there for years. The bowl is shallow and wide, carved to scoop cleanly from a cup of tea or the edge of a plate. The grain runs deep honey-amber through the wood, tightened by centuries of slow Mediterranean growth.

It came from an olive tree the Xylella killed — one of thousands that fell silent in the Salento. The wood was too beautiful to burn. So it found its way to Rosa's hands, and from there to yours: a second life for a fallen giant, shaped the way olives have been shaped for generations in the heel of Italy.

Olive wood is one of the hardest timbers on earth. This spoon will not splinter, will not leach, will not soften on the edge of a hot cup. Oil it once in a while and it ages into something warmer every year you use it. When this batch of wood is gone, the next one needs years of seasoning before it can be worked. No two grains match. The one you hold will be only yours.

WHY OLIVEWOOD

For thousands of years, kitchens ran on wood. Then came plastic — the kind that melts on a hot pan, scratches your good cookware, and sheds micro-fragments into your food every time you stir.

In 2024, researchers found toxic flame retardants recycled from electronic waste in many black plastic utensils. Olive wood does none of this. It won't melt. It won't scratch your pans. It releases nothing into your food — it's just wood.

A University of Wisconsin microbiologist showed in the 1990s that bacteria die on the surface of wood, while scratched plastic traps them in grooves where soap can't reach. Olive wood is one of the hardest, densest woods on earth: tight grain, naturally water-resistant, built for the kitchen by nature.

MATERIALS & SOURCING

Material: 100% solid olive wood — no veneer, no composite, no plastic core.

Finish: Food-safe natural oil. No synthetic lacquer, no chemical coatings.

Wood origin: Reclaimed from olive trees in the Salento region of Puglia, killed by the Xylella bacteria. No living tree is ever cut.

Grain: Every piece is unique — olive wood grain never repeats. Natural knots, colour variations and grain lines are not defects; they are the marks of a tree that lived for centuries.

Compliance: Food-contact safe.
