PRODUCT DETAILS

A plastic bowl doesn't just hold the salad — it sheds into it. Oil, acidity and every toss break micro-fragments loose into your food, the same microplastics researchers now find in human blood, in the placenta, even in the brain. You can't taste them. Your body keeps them anyway.

This is the opposite of that. One solid piece of olive wood, turned wide and shallow — no resin, no coating, no additives, nothing that leaches into your food. It's naturally cleaner, too: a University of Wisconsin microbiologist found that 99.9% of bacteria die on a wooden surface within minutes, while scratched plastic keeps them alive in its grooves.

At about 10 inches across it's the bowl that lands in the middle of the table — a salad tossed and served from the same dish, pasta, fruit, bread, popcorn for the film. Wide and low, it shows off what's in it, and it's light enough to pass around without a thought.

And here the grain really sings: banded, marbled currents rippling across pale honey wood, no two bowls ever alike — a pattern this tree spent a lifetime writing. Yours is only yours.

This is olive wood in the Mediterranean tradition Rose's Olivewood was born from — real wood against a world of plastic that ends up in your food. A little oil now and then and the grain only deepens with the years.

Hand wash and dry — never the dishwasher, and don't let it soak; oil it when the wood looks dry.

WHY OLIVEWOOD

For thousands of years, kitchens ran on wood, clay and stone — from the Greeks and Romans to your grandmother's table. Then came plastic: the kind that melts on a hot pan, scratches your good cookware, and sheds micro-fragments into your food every time you stir. We're the first generation to cook on a material that ends up inside us.

Those fragments don't just pass through you. Researchers now find microplastics in human blood, in the placenta, even in the brain — where levels rose about 50% between 2016 and 2024. A single plastic cutting board can shed tens of millions of particles into food over a year. Olive wood sheds nothing: one solid piece, no coating, no additives, nothing that breaks down into your meal.

In the 1990s, a University of Wisconsin microbiologist found that 99.9% of bacteria die on the surface of wood within minutes, while scratched plastic traps them in grooves where soap can't reach. Olive wood is one of the hardest, densest woods on earth — tight grain, naturally water-resistant, and carved by hand from a single piece. Built for the kitchen by nature, finished by Rose.

MATERIALS & SOURCING

Material: 100% solid olive wood — no veneer, no composite, no plastic core.

Finish: Food-safe natural oil. No synthetic lacquer, no chemical coatings.

Wood origin: Reclaimed from olive trees in the Salento region of Puglia, killed by the Xylella bacteria. No living tree is ever cut.

Grain: Every piece is unique — olive wood grain never repeats. Natural knots, colour variations and grain lines are not defects; they are the marks of a tree that lived for centuries.

Compliance: Food-contact safe.

Why olive wood

4 Reasons Kitchens Ran on Wood for 10,000 Years

Olive wood spoon resting on a hot pot — plastic melts, wood doesn't

Plastic melts into your food

Rest a plastic spoon on a hot pan and it softens, warps, and blisters — and some of it melts straight into what you're cooking. Olive wood does none of that. It sits on the rim of a boiling pot without changing shape, exactly as it did decades ago. Nothing softens, nothing leaches, nothing ends up in your dinner.

Olive wood bowl filled with fresh food — one tree, nothing else

One tree, nothing else

Plastic is a recipe you can't read — resins, dyes and additives blended together, quietly breaking down into your food under heat. This is the opposite: a single piece of a tree that stood in the Salento sun for a hundred years. Nothing added, nothing coating it, nothing hidden. What touches your food is exactly what you see — olive wood, and only olive wood.

Well-used olive wood cutting board, clean and cared for — 99.9% of bacteria die on it

99.9% of bacteria die on it

Grandmothers trusted a wooden board long before anyone could explain why. A University of Wisconsin microbiologist proved them right: 99.9% of harmful bacteria die on wood's surface within minutes, while a scratched plastic board keeps them alive down in its grooves. Every knife mark in plastic is a place for them to hide — wood simply lets them go.

Hands carving a piece of olive wood by hand — carved by hand, made to last

Carved by hand, made to last

This isn't stamped out of a mould by the thousand. Each piece is shaped by hand from a single block of olive wood — one of the hardest, densest woods on earth — so the grain runs unbroken and no two are alike. Cared for simply, it outlives every plastic spoon you'd throw away, and only grows more beautiful with the years.

What you're replacing

You've been eating your spoon

For two thousand years, olive trees older than Rome shaded the Salento. Then Xylella killed them, and the groves were cut down and burned. Rose — one of the last women still at the lathe in her region — couldn't let that ancient wood end as ash. For forty years she has carved every piece by hand, one at a time, giving thousand-year-old olive wood a second life. Each spoon holds the grain of a tree that outlived empires, shaped by a woman keeping a vanishing craft alive.

Where it began

They burned the dead trees. She saved them.

In the Salento — the heel of Italy — an invisible bacteria called Xylella swept through groves older than Rome, killing olive trees that had stood for two thousand years. Most were cut down and burned. Rose, a carver's daughter and one of the last women still at the lathe in her region, couldn't watch that wood go to ash. She began giving it a second life — a spoon, a board, a bowl at a time. Rose Olivewood was born from her story, and from a handcrafted tradition that is slowly disappearing: to bring that wood back into kitchens around the world, before the trees and the craft are gone for good.

I saved up for my pans and I was terrified of scratching them. I've been stirring sauce with this every night for a month — not one mark. It's the only thing I reach for now.

Switched from metal on a whim and I'm not going back. Solid in the hand, cuts and serves clean, and there's a warmth to real wood a steel handle never had. Already bought a second.

My husband got me this and it's quietly become my favorite thing in the kitchen. No clanging around the pot, the handle stays cool, it just feels good to cook with. Small thing, big difference.

Started with one and slowly replaced the whole plastic drawer. My kitchen looks warmer now, and I'm not tossing out melted spoons twice a year anymore. Wish I'd done it sooner.

Used metal for years and never thought twice. First time I cooked with this I realized how much gentler it is — no scraping, no scratching, no noise. I can't go back.

Half expected a cheap souvenir feel. It's the opposite — weighty, smooth, and the grain is gorgeous. I actually leave it out on the counter instead of hiding it in a drawer.

A little oil now and then and it looks better than the day it came. My nan's wooden spoons lasted 40 years — now I get why.

No more garlic-smelling spoon. It stays clean and neutral, meal after meal.

Ordered one to try. Three weeks later it's the only thing I reach for. The others are still in the drawer.

Arrived beautifully wrapped with a little card on how to care for it. Felt like a gift even though I bought it for myself.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really solid olive wood?

Yes — one solid piece, never laminated, painted, or coated. Just wood and a natural food-safe finish. Because it's real wood, no two pieces share the same grain: the one you receive is unlike any other.

How do I care for it?

Hand wash with warm water and mild soap, then dry it standing up. Every few weeks, rub in a little food-safe oil to keep the grain rich and protected. Treated this way, a piece lasts for decades.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

No — the heat and the long soak are the only things that harm olive wood. A quick hand wash is all it needs, and it's what keeps it beautiful for years.

Will it stain or hold onto food smells?

No. Olive wood is one of the densest woods there is, so it barely absorbs anything — no garlic or onion smell lingering, no tomato stains soaking in. It stays clean and neutral, meal after meal.

Is olive wood safe for non-stick and delicate pans?

Completely. It's firm enough to cook with but soft enough to leave no mark — it glides over non-stick and enamel instead of scratching them like metal does.

Why is each piece limited?

The wood is reclaimed from olive trees and has to season for years before it can be worked. There's only so much of it, so pieces come in limited batches. When one is gone, the next has to wait for the wood to be ready.
